— Obstacles and opportunities

Based on stakeholder interviews, ux reviews, best practices and user tests we identified many obstacles and opportunities to create a more frictionless user flow that also enables MyWheels to better present its offerings. There are so many variables to take into account. Time, duration, location, kilometer price, hourly rate, car type, car features, insurance, etc. all can be determining factors. Yet we do not want a cluttered experience. The solution to this is to presume certain choices and take certain information out of the equation. These presumptions and omissions are there when you need them to make a change but are not a distraction.

— Multiple user flows

There were multiple user flows within the app that needed improvement. The onboarding (with driver license check), finding a car nearby that fits your needs, reservation and payment, and your current trip itself. The latter included a flow for users to report any damages and the cleanliness of the car.

— Adding marketing to the mix

By adding pricing or just labels to the selection of cars within your location you can more directly help the user make choices. Based on previous reservations, the models that are currently available or even the weather. Also current or structural offerings can be promoted with notifications or as part of the MyWheels feed.

— As effortess as possible

In order to keep everyone safe and keep the cars damage-free, there have to be a number of checks when onboarding to the MyWheels services. We can’t skip the driver license check and we absolutely need to know your address in case of damages. But we also can make these steps as effortless as possible. Clearly communicating what to expect and what users need in the process is a good start. Checking each step to see if we truly need it or if we can simplify it is another way to optimize the flow.

— User testing with clickable prototypes

After the research phase and creating mid fidelity wireframes, 100+ designs and variants were created to explore the most vital flows and test clickable with prototypes, with our stakeholders, MyWheels employees and most importantly, actual users.
